Clip-in Guide for Fine Hair

If your hair is finer there are a couple of changes you will need to make compared to someone with natural thicker hair when it comes to clipping the extensions in.  You may find it more difficult to hide the weft and clip them in securely but don’t worry as we have got you covered with our tutorial and some tips for achieving the most natural looking blend to give you thick and luscious locks. We recommend using our Elegant range if you hair is finer as it contains one less weft than the other ranges meaning less weight and less wefts to hide. You can of course use our other ranges, you can always remove any weft you think are not needed as you do not have to use the full set if you do not wish.

STEP 1

Start by brushing your hair to ensure it is as smooth as possible and this will make everything much easier which will give you a better end result. Our paddle brush is perfect for this as the bristles are designed to make your hair as smooth as possible.

STEP 2

Grab a hair clip as we are ready to start sectioning the hair. With your fingers or a comb section a straight line across your head, this will be approximately just below the middle of your ear. Be sure to clip all the rest of your hair up securely out of the way. Measure the weft to your head where you have made the parting to ensure it fits comfortably, if it is a little too wide to fit then simply resection the hair a little higher up on your head.

Once you have the section, take one of your 3 clip wefts and brush it through. Clip the weft in just below the parting, clipping it in just below will ensure it can move naturally with your own hair and lie flat to the scalp. Start with the middle clip to ensure it is securely in the hair, next clip the other two sides in ensuring it is as straight and even as possible following your section. This way of clipping them in will apply to all the wefts.

Finer hair can also have a finer texture so the clips could be more likely to slip down your hair without following the correct guides. Backcomb the root or spray dry shampoo/texturizing spray to the section you have just taken.

STEP 3

Take a new clean section approximately an inch above the previous one, once you are happy it is straight and tidy, secure the remaining hair out of the way with your clip. Proceed to apply dry shampoo or texturizing spray at the root as you have done previously to avoid slipping. Take your second 3 clip weft and follow the same process ensuring they are clipped in securely and neatly starting with the middle. If you are using our Elegant range you will need to skip step 4 and move onto step 5 as you will not have the smaller 4 clip weft in your set.

STEP4

Take a new section half an inch above the last one ensuring the remaining hair is clipped out of the way and you follow the same steps as previously. Take your smaller 4 clip weft and clip this in below the parting, start in the middle first as this will be much easier. Make sure the weft is brushed before clipping it into your hair, make sure it is secure and comfortable for you before moving on.

STEP 5

Take the final section for the back of your head, this is where you will apply the biggest weft which is a 4 clip weft. This section should be below your crown, (usually lower down if your hair is very fine) ensure you have enough hair above it to successfully hide the weft. Follow the same guidelines as you have already done. Ensure it is placed just below the parting you have made.  Once you have clipped the weft in, ensure you are happy with how it looks from the back and the hair is all blended through. If you feel this weft is not covering well, either move it down or don't use it.

Quick Tip - Feel free to cut the wefts into smaller sections if you find the longer width wefts are too wide for you, just cut either side of the clips on the silicone banding. The way our hair extensions are sealed in place you don't need to worry about excessive shedding.

STEP 6

We will now move onto the sides of your head. Section a clean straight section approximately 1 inch above your ear and level with the final 4 clip weft you clipped in below the crown. Take your first 2 clip weft, follow the same process. Make sure you are happy with the positioning and ensure it is not uncomfortable before moving onto the next step.

We move onto our first 1 clip weft now; these are used to add more hair to the front where it frames your face. Section a small piece above the 2 clip weft, ensure it is near the front by your face as this will be where you likely need some additional blending. Take down the hair you have clipped up out of the way and ensure all wefts are covered and it is blended enough with your own hair.

STEP 7

If you are happy with the wefts you have already fitted, move onto the other side of your head and repeat step 6 for the final two wefts on the other side.

STEP 8

Once all the wefts are clipped in check, they are all secure, check in a mirror to make sure they are blended and you are happy with the end result. You then must brush the hair carefully; it is best to do this with your paddle brush as it will not pull excessively on the hair. Brush over the root very carefully being sure not to get the brush caught on the top of the wefts. For an elevated shine and sleekness, incorporate a few drops of your Gold Hair Oil by Foxy Locks.

Some tips for blending and hiding the hair if your hair is finer are below -

1. Curl your hair rather than straighten it as this will hide any shorter pieces of your hair making them less obvious

2. Be sure to backcomb or use dry shampoo/texturizing spray before placing any weft in your hair as the clips will need more texture to clip onto to prevent slipping.

3. Apply the wefts slightly lower down your head than what you would if you had thick hair as you will need to ensure you have enough hair to conceal all the wefts.

4. Only use as many wefts as you need, if you find you have to many just skip a couple of steps to suit your needs.

Please note you do not have to clip in all pieces, you can decide how many you feel comfortable wearing and how many suit your hair type. For finer hair you will find clipping in less pieces, lower down and not near the top of your head will give natural results and there will be no risk of your hair extensions showing. Remember that practise makes perfect so the more you follow this tutorial the easier it will become. Also, you can have a play around with clipping the extensions in as you may find placing the wefts in different places works better for you as everyone is different. As long as you follow our main guidelines you should have no problem with clipping in your new Foxy Locks. We hope you love them just as much as we do! We’re honoured to be a part of your hair routine.
