2023 Hair Heroes

2023 Hair Heroes

Happy new year!

As we enter 2024, we want to take a moment to celebrate our hair heroes of 2023. Whether it’s red carpet glam or an unmissable TikTok hair trend, we’ve seen some iconic moments for 2023 hair styles worthy of reflecting on.

Scandi Hairline

Just when we thought that we’d seen every possible variation of highlight technique, 2023 saw the birth of the Scandi hairline trend. Just like with babylights, the method involves taking extremely fine sections of hair and lightening them. The difference is that the Scandi Hairline focuses on the finer hair that frames the face. By concentrating the lightener on this area, the face is framed with a beautiful bright glow. It also has a super natural appearance, as though it has been sun bleached. In these bleak winter months, the Scandi hairline transports us back to beach holidays and tan skin! Elsa Hosk and Sophia Richie Grainge are known for their bright blondes.

Butterfly Layers

All things shag were on trend this year, as well as any variation of animal themed layering (jellyfish, octopus, wolf cut etc). Bouncy, voluminous locks were the end goal, as oppose to sleek straight looks that have previously been number one. Dramatic layering gives the hair body, movement and height. Reminiscent of the voluminous hairstyles of the eighties and nineties, butterfly layers feature cascading face framing layers. The hairstyle removes weight and bulk, keeping long lengths and wispy ends. Feathered, fluttery locks best suit those of us blessed with thicker hair, as it can have a tendency to look too sparse on fine hair. Matilda Djerf is the poster girl for the butterfly layers and bouncy blow-dry combination.

Bows

We’re suitably obsessed with the hyper-feminine coquette aesthetic. Girly, romantic accessories including ribbons and bows have been the go-to for fashion girls on Pinterest and TikTok for most of 2023. The rise of balletcore and a focus on soft, everyday elegance has meant that the bow revival appeals to a versatile range of tastes and styles. Chanel, Dior and Miu Miu have all exhibited some form of bow on their runways this year, and we predict that they’ll be sticking around for 2024 too. Emily Ratajkowski, Olivia Rodrigo and Sydney Sweeney have all been photographed sporting an oversized hair bow.

Curtain Bangs

Curtain bangs have been the it girl of the fringe world in 2023. Curtain bangs involve framing the face with a graduated sweep of hair typically growing out from a middle parting. It starts shorter in the centre of the eyebrows, getting longer towards the cheekbones and jawline. Typically, the curtain bangs are complimented by other layers within your hairstyle, accompanying a butterfly cut with ease. Curtain bangs suit a relaxed, hair style, such as undone curls or a mid-height ponytail to observe their full effect. Jenna Ortega and Margot Robbie both sported curtain bangs on red carpet events this year, providing the perfect #hairspo.

Texture

2023 was definitely NOT the year for dull locks. We embraced a broad range of styles, lengths and colours. Alongside the super sleek, clean girl aesthetic, we also experimented with lower maintenance messy textures. Think salt spray, mousse, volume, and big hair moments. ‘Rebel Texture’ is an emerging trend for the last portion of 2023, and will definitely be following us into the new year too. Coinciding with the revival of vintage hair looks, and taking influence from seventies Farrah Fawcett, flicks and wisps and choppy edges are all the rage. Daisy Edgar Jones and Simone Ashley have exhibited emphasised textured hair looks all year long.
