Can I remove my hair extensions at home?
Yes! Most types of hair extensions can be removed at home with the right methods. Some extensions are easier to remove than others, with semi-permanent types requiring a little more time and care to ensure they are removed safely. You might also need a helping hand to remove more intricate components, such as sewn-in extensions or micro rings.
How to remove clip in hair extensions
Clip in extensions are the easiest type to remove. For one, you don’t need to unbind your hair; you can concentrate on nourishing your hair.
First, section your natural hair away from the first section of extensions. Make sure you keep the natural section clipped up above your ears so you don’t pull it on it accidentally.
Slowly remove the clips one at a time. Hold the hair against the scalp to avoid breakage. Keep track of the extensions by working in sections. Doing this also prevents the clips from becoming entangled with the natural hair.
If you’re having trouble with a particular clip, spray some leave-in conditioner on it to loosen the grip. If your natural hair has become tangled with the extension, dampen everything lightly and slowly comb through.
How to remove tape in extensions
Tape in extensions may be more permanent than clip ins, but they’re still easy to remove!
You will simply need some tape remover or oil. We recommend argan oil, but coconut, almond, olive or even baby oil will work to break down the adhesives.
1. Divide hair into manageable sections. Identify which sections have extensions and separate them from your natural hair to make them easier to access.
2. Apply oil or tape remover to the adhesive portion. Let the oil or tape remover sit for around 15 minutes to break down the bonds in the tape or glue. This will make it much easier to remove the extensions from the hair.
3. Gently remove the extensions from the hair. If they are still feeling quite secure, you might need to add more oil or let it sit for longer before trying to remove the extensions.
4. Wash your hair to remove the oil. Once your extensions are all removed, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner to remove any oil from your natural hair.
Sewn in hair extension removal
We always recommend booking with a professional for the removal of sewn-in extensions. However, it is possible to remove them at home with the right tools and techniques. You will likely need a spare pair of hands to remove this type of hair extension.
Sewn in hair extension wefts should be removed one at a time.
1. Gather your hair into a ponytail to expose the extensions.
2. Find the end of the thread that secures your extensions and carefully snip it off.
3. Use a fine-toothed comb to ease the thread out of the hair gently. Use your fingers to trace along the line where the hair has been sewn in, and work slowly! It’s easy to cut your real hair when doing this, so try to get a friend, or better yet, a professional, to do it for you.
4. Ensure the thread is properly removed, then gently pull on the extension wefts to remove them. Use one hand to hold your natural hair, and the other to gently pull the extensions.
5. Repeat until all the wefts are removed.
This type of hair extension is typically sewn onto a braid, which can be easily undone, or onto micro rings.
Micro rings will require special pliers to remove them from the hair. Simply give the micro rings a squeeze until they loosen and slide out.
Once everything is removed from the hair, give it a thorough brushing. You might find a lot of hair comes out here, but don’t panic, it’s just what you would have naturally shed if your extensions weren’t holding it in. A dentangling treatment or hair oil can be helpful here.
Finally, wash your hair and the extensions you have just removed. Our hair extension care package has everything you need to keep your natural hair and extensions silky smooth!
