Ribbons and bows are timeless, elegant accessories that have decorated fashion and beauty looks for centuries. From royals in the Renaissance to social media style influencers, the bow has no shortage of fans and admirers across all eras.
The hair bow has remained a versatile and enduring embellishment, with an ability to transcend ages and trend cycles. From red carpets to catwalk shows and street style, the bow can be adapted to suit a broad variety of personalities, tastes, and subcultures. Women and girls of all ages and background can adapt the bow to suit their individuality, making it such an attractive method of accessorizing an otherwise plain look.
Iconic hair bow looks include Ariana Grande’s oversized organza accessory at the 2018 Met Gala, Hailey Bieber’s casual carousel of bows for daily hair wear, or the mini bow decorated looks at Sandy Liang’s Autumn Winter 2023 collection. Hyper-feminine touches have been a huge focus for womenswear designers over the last year, exaggerating romantic, playful approaches to typical clothing and makeup looks. Balletcore, girly goth, and the coquette microtrends have all exhibited an aspect of this.
Bows can come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, varying in wearability and extravagance. From silk to lace, satin to velvet, there is nothing that cannot be fashioned into some form of bow detailing.
Luckily for you, here at Foxy Locks, we’ve handcrafted the ultimate bow clips. If you’re looking for some inspiration, here’s our curated guide on our top hair bow looks:
Sleek Low Ponytail
1.The key to achieving sleek hair is to start on hair that is silky smooth. Brush out your locks to remove tangles. If your hair is curly, kinky, or textured, you may consider straightening. If applying heat to your hair, ensure that you are using a good quality heat protectant product.
2.Once your hair is tangle free, and straightened if you’ve opted for this, you can apply a serum or hair oil to add shine and tame flyaways.
3.Create a clean parting using a fine-tooth comb, either down the centre or side of your head. A sharp, straight parting will contribute to the sleekness of your finished look.
4.Brush the hair into a low ponytail. Soft bristle brushes are ideal for achieving a smooth finish, as they will evenly distribute oil throughout the hair. Smooth out any bumps and secure with an elastic hair tie.
5.Take a small piece of hair from the ponytail and wrap around the base, disguising the hair elastic. Secure in place with a hair grip.
6.Spray the look with a light hold hair spray to hold in place. Finish with the addition of a large bow, placed above the ponytail.
Romantic Half Up Half Down
1.The secret to curls that hold all day (if you’re not naturally blessed), is to start on hair that is clean and dry. First, wash your hair with our specially formulated Shampoo and Conditioner duo. Whilst the hair is still damp, apply our Luxury Gold Oil throughout to prevent heat damage while drying.
2.Once the hair is fully blow-dried, section the top and bottom into manageable parts for curling.
3.Using the Gold Plated 32mm Curling Wand, begin wrapping the hair around the barrel, pulling hair gently away from the face. Work around the full head, holding curls briefly in position to cool before dropping and moving on to your next section.
4.Once your have completed a full head of curls, flip your hair upside down and separate the curls by running your fingers or a wide tooth comb through.
5.To create the half up, half down style, trace your thumbs around your head, starting at your temples and meeting in the middle, at the back of your head. Gently gather this section without disrupting your curls, and tie in place using an elastic hair tie.
6.Pull forward some face framing curls from the ponytail. Finish with a small bow detail, placing the clip above the half up ponytail.
Bouncy High Ponytail
1.For a super bouncy ponytail, aim for as much height as possible. Begin by brushing your hair into place, securing at the crown of your head with an elastic hair tie.
2.If your hair is lacking volume or length, our Remy clip in ponytail extension is here to the rescue! Simply slide the clip of the extension underneath your natural hair and wrap the Velcro fastening around the base of your ponytail to attach firmly.
3.To achieve a sixties bounce, apply a mousse or texturizing spray to your ponytail.
4.For a flick on the ends, use a round brush and a blow-dryer, running down the length of the ponytail first, then wrapping lightly on the ends. Hold in place for a couple of seconds to set the style. Alternatively, you can use a straightener for more precision to exaggerate the bounce.
5.Finish the look with a spritz of Hair Perfume and Shine spray, for a beautifully scented boost throughout your day or night.
