How to Put in Clip In Extensions for Thick Hair: Step-by-Step Guide

STEP 1: Prep Your Mane

Start by thoroughly brushing your thick locks to ensure it is as smooth as possible. This will make everything much easier and give you a better end result. Our Foxy Locks paddle brush is perfect for this task, designed to smooth even the most voluminous hair.

STEP 2: Clip in Your First Weft

You’ll now need some hair clips. Create a straight part across the back of your head, just below your ears. Secure the rest of your hair up and out of the way.

Measure the weft to ensure it fits comfortably where you made the part. If it is a little too wide, simply resection your hair a little higher up on your head.

Now, take one of your 3 clip wefts and brush it through. You will clip the weft just below your part.

Starting with the middle clip, secure it and then clip the other two sides in. Make sure it is straight and even and moves naturally with your hair while lying flat on your scalp.

PRO TIP: For thick hair, you might need to create slightly wider sections to accommodate the volume of both your natural hair and the extensions.

STEP 3: Layering

If you have our Elegant range please skip this step and move onto Step 4.

Create another section about half an inch above your previous one. Using your hair clips, secure the rest of your hair out of the way.

Apply the smaller 4-clip weft and measure it against your head. Clip it in just below the parting, starting with the middle clip for a secure hold, and follow the same process above.

STEP 4: Build the Volume

Create another clean, straight section just above the last one (about even with the top of your ears), and secure your hair out of the way.

Take your larger 4-clip weft and follow exactly the same process as before. Be sure to brush your extensions before clipping them into your hair.

Keep your clip-ins as straight as possible to achieve that professional, natural look.

STEP 5: Crown Your Look

Section off another area of hair just below the crown. Ensure you have enough hair left on top to cover the weft completely.

Following our process of parting and securing hair out of the way, apply the largest weft.

Clip in as you have previously done, following the same process.

Once the final weft is securely clipped, neatly take down your hair to check if your weft is covered.

Pro Tip: Apply a small amount of strong-hold hair spray once you have finished clipping in your wefts and styling your hair to help prevent any part of your clip-in from showing.

STEP 6: Frame Your Face

Now, let’s move to the sides of your head to complete your look!

Section your hair approximately 1 inch above your ear and level with the final 3 clip weft you clipped in below the crown. You’ll apply the 2-clip weft here.

Continue the same process of applying your weft: brush it, clip it, straighten it.

STEP 7: Balance It Out

If you want to frame your face a bit more and fill in any gaps, you’ll want to add a 1-clip weft.

You’ll section your hair slightly above and in front of the 2-clip weft for extra blending around your face. Follow the same process used for the other wefts.

Repeat Steps 6 and 7 for the other side of your head.

STEP 8: Blend and Shine

Let down all your hair and, using your paddle brush, gently brush your hair to blend your natural hair with the extensions.

Do not brush at the top of the extensions, as you don’t want the brush to get caught in between your hair and the weft.

Add a few drops of our Gold Hair Oil by Foxy Locks for extra shine and seamless integration.

That’s it. You’re now ready to style your luscious locks and turn heads wherever you go!

Styling Tips for Thick Hair with Extensions

Now that your extensions are clipped in, here are some ways you can style your hair to create a more seamless, natural look:

  1. Curls are Your Friend: Curling both your natural hair and extensions together can help them blend seamlessly.
  2. Layering is Key: If your hair is very thick, ask your stylist to add some layers. This will help the extensions blend more naturally.
  3. Backcombing for Grip: Lightly backcomb the roots where you'll place the clips. This ensures they won’t slip.
  4. Heat Styling: Use heat protectant and style your natural hair and extensions together for a cohesive look.
